چکیده

We propose a Landau model to describe the smectic C isotropic phase transition. A general Landau theory for the coupled orientational and translational order parameters and including the tilt angle is developed. The conditions for the smectic C isotropic phase transition and the stability conditions of the smectic C phase are calculated. On the basis of this model it is argued that the smectic C isotropic phase transition is always first order. We present a detailed analysis of the question under which conditions a direct smectic C isotropic phase transition prevails in comparison to smectic A isotropic and nematic isotropic transitions. The theoretical results are found to be in qualitative agreement with all published experimental results. Typeset using REVTEX

Modeling the isotropic/smectic-C tilted lamellar liquid crystalline transition

Extensions of a previously presented Landau-de Gennes type liquid crystalline phase transition model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A (lamellar) a phase transition to the direct isotropic/smectic-C (tilted lamellar) transition are studied. Two different proposed extensions to the model are studied both in the context of ideal ordering (point volume) and full three-dimensional uniaxial scalar/...

Nonisothermal model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid-crystalline transition.

An extension to a high-order model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A liquid-crystalline phase transition was derived to take into account thermal effects including anisotropic thermal diffusion and latent heat of phase ordering. Multiscale multitransport simulations of the nonisothermal model were compared to isothermal simulation, showing that the presented model extension corrects the standa...

Disclination unbinding transition in quantum Hall liquid crystals

We derive the long-wavelength elastic theory for the quantum Hall smectic state starting from the HartreeFock approximation. Dislocations in this state lead to an effective nematic model for T.0, which undergoes a disclination unbinding transition from a phase with algebraic orientational order into an isotropic phase. We obtain transition temperatures that are in qualitative agreement with rec...

A phenomenological theory of the isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition.

In this paper we discuss the direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition on the basis of a phenomenological theory. The model free energy is written in terms of the coupled order parameters including the spontaneous polarization. We present a detailed analysis of the different phases that can occur and analyze the question under which conditions a direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C ...

Disordering to order: de Vries behavior from a Landau theory for smectic phases.

We show that Landau theory for the isotropic (I), nematic (N), smectic-A, and smectic-C phases generically, but not ubiquitously, implies "de Vries" behavior: i.e., a continuous A-C transition can occur with little layer contraction while the birefringence increases significantly once the system moves into the C phase. Our theory shows that 1st order A-C transitions are also possible. These tra...
